About Our School

In 1954 five lots of land were purchased from Duncan and Irene McGregor, as well as lots from Alvin Brown, Phil Willitts, Louis Schindler and Norman Walker for the construction of St. Mary’s Catholic School. On October 1, 1958, eighty-one students began classes in the new school with two teachers. St. Mary’s, West Lorne and St. Thomas More, Rodney were twinned in 1975. In 1983, five out of seven lots were donated to St. Mary’s Church by the McGregors and were designated for a six room expansion of the school. December 1995 saw the completion of the new school wing and the closure of St. Thomas More School in Rodney. In January 1996, all area separate school students attended St. Mary’s School.

Living Our Faith

The education of our students is a shared responsibility of home, school and parish. St. Mary’s is blessed to have a dedicated staff, who, in the spirit of faith, serve our students with commitment for academic excellence, and nurturance of individual gifts, rooted in the Gospel, and reflected in the tenets of our Catholic faith. Catholic education is distinctive in its role to form the whole child through faith formation. The Catholic Graduate Expectations guide the life roles, knowledge, skills and attitudes of our graduates.

Each month, we gather as a faith community to celebrate the Eucharist at our parish, St. Mary’s Church. Classroom visits, and the celebration of the Sacraments of First Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation further our distinct identity as an educational community in Christ. Our students give witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice, and the sacredness of human life. Various charities benefit from the efforts of our students.

Transportation Information

It is the responsibility of bus companies to determine if it is safe to operate in their service area. Messages regarding a 2 hour delay of bus service, or complete cancellation of buses will be provided through our local radio stations, and online at the Western Ontario School Bus Association.

When school is open and buses are delayed or cancelled, planned curriculum may be impractical due to the number of absences. Durig this time, remediation and cross-grade activities, however, are possible. We will do our utmost to provide a balance of meaningful and age appropriate activities that make use of the opportunity of smaller numbers at the school.

Listen to the following station for bus delay/cancellation: CFPL 980 AM, BX93, 92.7 SKSY, 94.3 FM.

School Safety

St. Mary’s takes safety seriously. The Safe Arrival Program ensures all students are accounted for. Monthly safety audits are conducted. Staff have CPR and Standard First Aid training. A trauma team is in place should the school community need support. Regular Fire, Tornado, Shelter in Place, Hold and Secure and Lockdown drills are conducted in accordance with Board Procedure and Ministry regulations.

It is the right of every child to grow in goodness, discipline and knowledge within a positive school climate. We ask that you, the family, work with us in promoting Catholic attitudes and practices throughout our school community.
